Our work is complex, often unpredictable, and above all… human. Harmful incidents are bound to occur at some point in every human community. So the question is… what do effective school leaders do AFTER harm has occurred in their schools?
There are countless tools designed to help us approach decisions. But there are two I use often: the Facilitator’s Guide to Participatory Decision-Making and the RAPID framework.
Some say first impressions are everything. When I meet with a new team for the first time, there is one specific “Day 1” activity that I find myself using time and time again – the Hopes & Fears protocol.
What are your non-negotiables as a leader? What do you expect from your team? What won’t you tolerate? And most importantly, are you clear with people about what matters to you?
How often do you communicate why your school or team does what it does? As school leaders, effectively explaining the rationales for decisions should be our first communication priority.
